You must perform certain preliminary tasks to use accelerated 3D graphics on a virtual machine.

The accelerated 3D graphics feature is enabled by default on Workstation 6.x and later virtual machines.

  • Prepare the host system to use accelerated 3D graphics. See Prepare the Host System to Use 3D Accelerated Graphics.
  • If using DirectX 9, verify that the guest operating system is Windows XP or later. DirectX 9 is supported on virtual machines running hardware version 11 or earlier.
  • If using DirectX 10, verify that the guest operating system is Windows 7 or later. DirectX 10 is supported on virtual machines running hardware version 12 or later.
  • If using DirectX 10.1, verify that the guest operating system is Windows 7 or later. DirectX 10.1 is supported on virtual machines running hardware version 16 or later.
  • If using DirectX 11, verify that the guest operating system is Windows 7 or later. DirectX 11 is supported on virtual machines running hardware version 18 or later.
  • Verify that the latest version of VMware Tools is installed in the guest operating system.
  • Power off the virtual machine. The virtual machine must not be suspended.

With the release of today’s new GeForce Game Ready driver, DirectX 12 Ultimate and its features are fully supported on GeForce RTX GPUs on Windows 10 operating systems using version 2004 or newer. To download and install this new driver, simply fire up GeForce Experience and click the 'Drivers' tab. I just upgraded from VMware Workstation 15.5 to 16, and there was no update to VMware Tools with it (it's still using version 11.0.6 build 15940789 which only supports up to DirectX 10.1). When I select in VMware Workstation preferences to 'Download All Components Now' it tells me 'All downloadable.

Procedure

  1. Select the virtual machine and select VM > Settings.
  2. On the Hardware tab, select Display.
  3. Select Accelerate 3D graphics.
  4. Configure the virtual machine to use only one monitor.
  5. Click OK to save your changes.
  6. Power on the virtual machine and install the required DirectX EndRuntime version.
This download is available from the Microsoft Download Center.
  7. Install and run your 3D applications.

I’ve been experimenting with the virtual machines lately however I’m stuck now.

For some reason I cannot run programs that use directx. I have a RTX2080 and the host computer runs on directx 12. The virtual machine is running on directx 11 for some reason and and when I launch GTA V(the software I’m using to test the performance) it tells me that it needs at least directx 10 or higher and it crashed the game.

The vmware version I’m using is workstation 16 player and I’m running windows 7 pro.

I’m also concern that the vm isn’t gonna be good enough for any kind of load as it’s slow at loading things and “rubbery” even if it has 4/4 cpu cores, 10/16GB ram and 4/8GB Vram.

I’m gonna add some pictures to show the setup and the problem I’m having
