Civilization IV: Promotions. In previous civ games, units have only a few levels: conscript, regular, veteran, and elite. Now in Civ4, there are more than 40 promotions you can give to your units as they gain experience, enabling you to customize your units to make them more specialized and more powerful. Some of the promotions give your units.

One of the great strategic aspects of Civilization 6 is the ability to promote your units. This is more than just a boost for troops that survive a battle. Promotion also allows you to specialize your units as well as add some other flavorful aspects. You can learn how to upgrade your units with our Civ 6 How to Promote Units Guide.

  • In the beginning of the game, after you have bought an Apostle, you typically get to choose between two different promotions for that Apostle the following turn. However, in the very late game, after you have bought like 20-30 apostles, you do not get the option to promote an Apostle the turn after they spawned any more.
  • For information on Rock Band promotions, see Rock Band (Civ6). Promotions are special traits which military units in Civilization VI and its expansions can earn to enhance their battlefield performance in various ways. Units earn promotions by gaining experience points (XP) and leveling up.

Civ 6 How to Promote Units Guide

Promoting a unit in Civilization VI starts with gaining enough XP. While the Promote Unit button on each unit is always visible, it is only active when your unit reaches the necessary XP to unlock the promotion. Remember, you can only promote a unit on a turn when they have not taken their full movement.

When you promote a unit matters, because the action ends your turn. However, the trade-off is that you gain up to 50 Health Points back when the unit is promoted. You do not have to promote your unit right away, but waiting will cost you XP. Your unit will not continue to accrue XP as long as a promotion is available.

When you click the Promot Unit button on the unit panel, you will see all of your potential options. Each promotion offers different bonuses that you will need to choose between.
